ELL: Highbury & Islington trains start February 28th
Railfuture, the independent campaign group for railway investment, reports that the northern extension of the East London Line will begin operating ahead of schedule and that the trains will run right through to Crystal Palace and West Croydon, without any need for an interchange:
A test train was operated successfully by London Overground on Thursday 6 January 2011.
That should now clear the way for the ELL extension to be opened for passengers from Monday 28 February.
It is expected to begin as an “unadvertised” service and a full public service should be fully operational by May.
Trains from platform 1 at Highbury & Islington will depart every 15 minutes to West Croydon while trains to Crystal Palace will leave every 15 minutes from platform 2...
At Highbury & Islington station, ELL passengers will be able to switch to NLL trains to Richmond and Clapham Junction, the Underground’s Victoria line and First Capital Connect services to Moorgate and Hertford/Welwyn Garden City.

Hi Nick,
Thanks very much for the post, this is great news! I think this line will be hugely popular.
(I've just moved in to Brockley from Peckham and my girlfriend lives in Seven Sisters so this is just great news for us!)
Regards,
Henry
Hi Henry, welcome to the neighbourhood.
If you see a man muttering, twitching and occasionally cursing at trees, that'll be you know who.
Islingmung
great news for gooners!
Henry - Welcome to Brockley.
To fit in with the Brockley Central Massive, don't forget to kneel in the direction of Dalston and say a prayer to the East London Line God each time before you board one of the mighty orange trains.
You'll have plenty of time - they're always running late.
No, not usually. And when they do there is generally one along in a few mins.
D - must try harder.
Question and apologies in advance for my ignorance.
Unless one has a girlfriend in seven sisters like Henry, why would one want to go from Crystal Palace to Highbury?
I don't know, perhaps if one lived in one of those places and wanted to go to the other one of those places.
A more likely journey than a Central Line trip from West Ruislip to Epping - that Central Line must be useless, it's a wonder there are so many people using it.
@ Tedd
Slightly daft question. London Overground is very similar concept to London Underground. People tend to use it for shortish journeys. It's not designed to be a long distance service, hence the emphasis on standing room on board.
I'd imagine there will be a fair few commuters from north London who start to use it - I know I would if I still lived up there. At the moment the trains always seem slightly empty north of Canada Water. Shame it doesn't run all the way to Finsbury Park.
The Arcola Theatre have just moved to a new building 100 metres (their estimate) from Dalston Junction and would I'm sure be glad of a flood of ELL-borne business from Brockley: http://www.arcolatheatre.com/?cmsId=12&page=Directions
Tedd, don't worry, It's not compulsory. one can undertake shorter trips or use the locomotive service to travel to a station whereupon one can avail themselves of an alternative service. Adults call this 'hopping on the train' and 'changing'. Your local special school has classes for those unable to cope with the complexities of a modern urban transport services.
Great news. Gives a new route to Walthamstow for me which may even be quicker than the current Southern, Northern Line and Victoria Line option.
Watch Boris turn up at the opening and take all the credit.
My parents live in Gospel Oak ... one of my oldest friends lives in Highbury ... I love Cafe OTO in Dalston ... Brick Lane and surrounds are vibrant and full of young people ... one of my sisters lives in Acton ... The Geffrye Museum is great also good cafe ... Wapping is a great place and packed with history ... my kids love using it ... I have many old friends who live in Kilburn ... if I want to buy some shoes in South Moulton Street, Canada Water ... Bang! I am a Londoner with a history spread to the cardinal points of this city ... Yawn ... I'm making myself sleepy with all the different reasons why Overground is a Good Thing. Roll on further extension!! Pipe down all you boring detractors and get a life.
I'm horrified ... I meant South Molton St of course ... I mean ... honestly
Tedd, some of us SE Londoners actually work in North London. I realise it's hard to imagine that there is life North of the river, of course...
Islington is a vibrant hub of bars, many of my friends go there instead of soho - ill be using it without a doubt! Basically then, this means all trains from brockers go there?
@Catman - it sounds like that, although I'd like to see a timetable as proof.
@ Nick
The National Rail journeyplanner on their website suggests all the Brockley trains will run to Highbury.
Cool, thanks. That's a really big bonus as many of the early reports suggested we might have to change at Dalston.
Ok I get it, I will look for a girlfriend in Seven Sisters!
Yay!
I really can not contain my excitement.
We can now get to the rough undesirable end of Islington WITHOUT changing.
Penge - eat your heart out.
Lou,
Have you even been to Highbury and Islington? It has a lovely road called Upper Street with great restaurants of every description. It has wonderful theatres and pubs. It has some beautiful residential areas, a great park. And it has one of the finest football stadiums in the world. You should jump on that scary orange train some time and check it out.
Tim
I wouldn't worry about lou's opinion. You'll see from his usual utterances that they're fairly narrow in scope, reactionary, based on bizarre assertions - Strictly for the middle brow reader. Essentially unless a resource serves his needs exactly then it is of no use to anyone. Can you imagine working with him? Lots of eye rolling must go on behind his back.
And there is the Little Angel Puppet Theatre.
I went there yesterday to see Alice in Wonderland... great! On until the end of the month. Suitable even for adults.

A direct link to the Union Chapel? Superb news!
I have to agree I am desperately excited about this! All sorts of great things about this link.

@Tim
Yeah the good bit of Upper Street is at the Angel end.
It's all a bit of a dive by the time you get to Highbury - as you'd expect of anywhere with an Arsenal link.
As for the stadium, if it's not White Hart Lane it's not worth going to.
And my colleagues never roll their eyes. They
know I make sense. They're just all too politically correct to admit it.
@ Lou - Oh you're a Spurs fan. All makes sense now...
Argh, Lou, why did you have to reveal that? All the goodwill we built up with our Champions League exploits... ruined!
Ah so that's why this site is so good - turns out we're all spurs fans!
Ah so that's why I'm always amazed this site is so good - turns out you're all spurs fans!
Just great news - as I commented on the facebook page, my climbing centre is in Finsbury Park/Manor House. I go to it on average 3x per week, mostly on week nights and travelling back around 10pm ish. This is such a boon for me I can't find words to describe it!
Reasons for going to H&I - Morgan M restaurant, my favourite in London.
And I disagree that the good bit of Upper St is the Angel end.
I know it's sort of mean and pettily blogsphere-ish but Lou's posts seem to define square-osity (see L7). I mean Angel end of Upper Street is a vibe-wasteland compared to the other end ... and I'm in my 40s!! I may have this wrong ... but maybe Lou is in his 90s? In which case ... good on you Oldster!
Is Bigfoot Actual or bogus? For over 4 hundred many years, there happen to be reporting’s of a guy like beast that is definitely absolutely coated in hair.
