Goldsmiths Tavern will become The New Cross House
You don't win friends with salad.
She casually drops the new name in to her mouth-watering review of Meateasy, the new restaurant opening on the pub's first floor soon. She says:
With the pub downstairs with the #MEATEASY upstairs, it's not a pop-up; more chop-up. Think dive bar - it's open till 2am on Thursdays and Fridays, 5am on Saturdays. There will be parties, boozing, burgers and other meaty delights, and all five minutes walk from my flat.

Not clear, will the #meateasy think be a permanent feature of the pub? sounds good if so.
The website says it will be "for a very limited time only" but who knows, maybe if it takes off, they'll stay put.
The MEATEASY is just for a few weeks; it's set up while Yianni, the owner of Meatwagon, gets money together to replace his stolen burger van.
In spite of its numerous problems, I've really enjoyed living in New Cross over the past couple of years, and have been especially surprised by its array of quality pubs.
I've actually taken great pride in introducing friends from trendy areas such as Hoxton and Dalston to places like The Royal Albert, The Montague and Amersham Arms, proving to them once and for all that there are decent watering holes in South East London.
And with The New Cross House, we'll hopefully have another destination pub to add to the list.
So, it's reverting to the original name, still visible in the stonework at the top of the building. A bit of a shame to see the Tavern name go, but it's a shadow of its once vibrant self.
It'll be interesting to see how a gastro pub goes down. Goldsmiths students are generally richer and more discerning then they were 10/15 years ago. But will there be sustained interest, especially out of term time?
Good that they're reverting to original name rather than coming up with something with no relation to the place - it is actually the pub after which New Cross is named, rather than the other way round (the original pub on the site was apparently called The Golden Cross).
I don't think it will be a high end gastro pub, food in the Actress in East Dulwich (run by same people) includes lots of pizzas etc in the £8/9 bracket.
@Transpontine - good local knowledge, thank you!
Meatwagon burgers within half a mile of where I live. Excellent. they really are amazing http://www.flickr.com/photos/beenbrun/sets/72157624519806891/with/4856340141/
this is not on the brockley map...I Imagine it would be good to have it as we are all happy about it!
Good cross-thread fertilization. thank you.
I always assumed it was the New Cross Inn opposite that was once the Golden Cross Inn.
Checking on that, came across this, which relates to the sale of the New Cross [not House] Inn
http://nxlive.co.uk/nxmag/2010/10/932/
Those burgers look raw.
Is there going to be a mungeasy for the local vegetarians?
Rare, raw, it's all good so long as it's meaty!
Your 'joke' isn't even half-baked either.
Quite nicely seared on the outside, nicely rare on the inside. Looks very good to me. A burger that thick would be dry and chewy if cooked to well-done.
Stick to Mac Ds, maybe.
That was a lob over Ed at the anon above him, obviously.
A very unrevealing smidgen more on the Inn opposite: http://www.christie.com/news/latest/9/14469
Thx Danja, will create a separate thread for this when I get a moment.
@NXG_Resident - Coming from crime-ridden shitholes like Dalston and Hoxton, they probably thought it was paradise down here.
I wonder what the Inn went for? £2 million was the asking price a while back.
Edit: just found it, £950,000 guide price but went for an undisclosed sum (presumably less or they'd be boasting about it).

Rare burgers are not good. The mincing process mixes external layers (which may be contaminated) with internal ones.
A rare steak is OK becuase any germs on the outside get charred but a burger should be cooked right through.
Are you pregnant?
These burgers sound proper pukka. Gordon, stop being a muppet!
Links tend to come out bad on these comments, but you can see an original 'artist's impression' of the New Cross House on this awesome site
http://www.ideal-homes.org.uk/lewisham/assets/galleries/new-cross/new-cross-house
If that doesn't work, search "New Cross House" in google and click on the idealhomes link.
Nice one Tom. I wonder if the stable building to the rear of the Tavern/House predates the current pub?
Think the historical nod to the original name is good but it's a bit odd having two pubs opposite each other with pretty much the same name...
What like the Old Tiger's Head and the New Tiger's Head in Lee?
One or other of those is shut down isn't it?
Yes, but they survived with similar names for rather a long time.
Tru dat

As the person responsible for the purchase of the soon to be 'The New Cross House', the ensuing design and the instigator of #meateasy 'chop-up', I am happy to answer any questions you may have. I will happily listen to suggestions on what, if anything, the area lacks pubwise.
Regards
Scott

Re the dodgy burger advice. It may be tru but if you have decent meat from a source you trust then rock on! What about home made Mayo, unpasturised cheese and steak tartare? If your willing to risk a sandwich made in a deli with those unwashed hands then imminent burger death should hold no fears. Botulism, do your worse.
Good game Nick. Racking my brain for more.
Scott - please have several ales on draught.
@Scott Just don't host tacky funk or r'n'b nights and you'll be fine.
Looking forward to a pint or five at The New Cross House when you open.
they'll be plenty of Ales, including the one we brew ourself at The Florence in Herne Hill.
No tacky nights, promise
Its great to see more and more pubs brewing there own Ale,dont know if the Firkin chain still do.
http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/acmsfburgers0807.pdf
Irest my case
The Firkin chain was broken up and I don't think any brew their own beer any more.
Certainly the Fox and Firkin in Lewisham doesn't.
You'll not find many friends here Gordon. From the throughly positive reviews and knowing Yianni I think the burgers will be very popular with BCers. Can't wait.
While you're here Gordon, whats with the new face?
Thats it, I am getting a few friends together for a Saturday afternoon pub crawl around NX. Any takers?
I take it you actually read the report? Also says that other cooking times and temperatures should not be ruled out if the provider can demonstrate it's safe. Case overturned.
I guess your the type who packs baked beans whrpen visiting Thailand so as not to risk the street food?
is it not this one???

Gordon,
If you don't want to eat the burgers, don't. I'm fairly certain the rest of us are educated enough on burger vans to make up our own minds, without you posting a 43 page report on them.
And if anyone can get their hands some some cheeky unpasturised cheese...
I thing gordon prefers his cheese from a can. No nasty germs.
Hi Scott, good luck with the new/old pub. Perhaps something for veggies would be good!
Also Scott I have seen reports that you are planning to refurbish and re-open at Easter. Care to elaborate?
Would veggies have enough energy to walk that far?
Have now posted a short history of the Goldsmiths Tavern and the New Cross House - feel free to add any further information you've got.
Great stuff, Transpontine.
Just to be awkward, the ground looks to be going downhill behind the NXH in one of those images, which would place it the other side of the road, no?
Another Christies/New Cross nightspot article
http://www.christie.com/news/list/1/14435?article=14435
Difficult to tell what's going on with the slope in that 18th century picture, assuming it's accurate. The tollgate was at the top of what is now CLifton Rise (Clifton Hill as it was once known), so on the ground there is a slope from south to north - which would as you say imply that this picture was drawn looking towards Deptford with the New X House on site of current New X Inn. But there is also a general slope down as the road comes from Detpford towards central London, and the picture does suggest the road dipping beyond the turnpike in line with this.
Le Fez to open again. Who'd have thunk? Good premises, but always attracted dodgy crowds and promoters over the years. It'll be intersting to see what the new owners come up with.
In other NX pub news, I've been informed that The Hobgoblin is getting redecorated. That place still has the best beer garden in New Cross.
Cue whinge about noise from said beer garden.....
New Cross House sounds amazing! Show's the area is rocketing. I hope it's kitted out like Shoreditch House with the roof bar and pool, the cocktails at Soho House are amazing too. Defs worth the membership, wonder if they'll do an offer for locals, as it's usually £800 for a year which seems a bit steep for round here...
Silly me, I thought it was going to be a pub.
it will very much be a pub.
Close the downstairs feb 7th and will probably start refurb early March so open mid April. No swimming pool.
Transportine, that background information is going to prove invaluable in the pub's development. Brilliant
They used to have strippers there in the early 70's.
Less of a need for local strippers now we are linked to Shoreditch High Street by the London Overground ;-)
Only seven stops...........
Great to hear capital have taken on the goldsmiths tavern, I'm a fan of their other doer upper pubs like the victoria in peckham - please bring the scotch eggs with you! also a suggestion, some sort of railing out the front for people to lock their bikes to would be very welcome, ta.
Speaking as a man of experience there, TM ;)
Glad to hear there is to be no roof pool and other pretentious rubbish.
The Railway at New Cross Gate used to have strippers too. And the White Hart recently tried but failed to bring them back (presumably not the same strippers).
Ah, yes, the award winning White Hart…
http://ow.ly/3zSPR
I walked pass the Hobgobblin yesterday and I think it's more like a lick of paint than a full on refurb... but I agree it has be the best beer garden ( ie the only one in NX!)
@Scott, I can't wait to have my first drink and meal at the NX House, very best of luck! Can we also have a varied selection of wines? Ta
The White Hart was torn to shreds a while back, by the News Shopper Pub Spy.
A lick of paint will do the Hob good - it has become tatty and decrepit in recent years.
Does anyone know what happened to the plans to turn the Walpole into a hotel?
#THRoses said...
The Hobgoblin doesn't have the only beer garden in New Cross. The Rosemary Branch (lately the Black Flag) has one as does the Goldsmiths Tavern (soon to be New Cross House).
The Hob keeps theirs open the most often and is probably the best maintained of the 3 gardens and hence why the pub is popular.
The White Hart really is piss-poor. Such a shame, as a building it has a lot of potential. It desperately needs a new owner.
And the owner of the White Hart claimed at the time of his application to turn the place into a strip joint, that he had tried everything to make the place a going concern. Clearly he didn't try air freshener, a new carpet, lick of paint and new lighting.
The owner clearly has no business sense, I can't think of anything more likely to cause a grubby, seedy pub with a bad rep to go down the toilet than turning it into a grubby, seedy strip joint.
Still good news that other pubs in NX are being developed properly.
Scott - please price reasonably and not at rip-off prices like central London.
Cheapish beer means more customers, more regular custom and good first time impressions.
@ Anon regarding beer prices. We really must be careful here. Was it not proven by 'Love Detective' and others that cheap beer brings certain 'elements' in its wake in discussions on this blog in the run up to The Talbot reopening.
Also could I applaud 'Headhunters' comments on The White Hart.
Strip joints need not be seedy.........
I shouldn't think the clientele of Stringfellow's would be persuaded to pop into the White Hart in New Cross instead...
Maybe if the beer was cheap enough?
I don't think Peter Stringfellow targets the "pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap" market!
They sound an excellent lot, high net worth individuals et al. You're right, The White Hart was barking up the wrong tree.
I think Peter's claim that Stringfellows isn't seedy was irony, HH.
How about 'Mungfellows' - a strip club for Brockley? Hirsuite women and organic snacks.
On a recent visit to Coventry, to which I return sometimes to keep abreast, I couldn't help noticing a number of 'Topless car washes' had sprung up on vacant lots, doubtless set up by thrusting local business men and women. There are a number of such lots in the New Cross area, Come on you budding entrepreneurs!
I think I'm happy about the tavern take over. I was originally unhappy about the change of name but since reading up on the history it seems like a good idea. I still miss the Tavern as it was - sticky floors, loud music, boarded up windows & access to the pool room through the ladies loo. But it's no good as it is at the moment and Capitals take over seems to be a positive one. I like The Victoria in Peckham with it's tasty food and ales so something like that would be welcomed. The Albert and The Talbot are great pubs but lack outside areas. Will there be a beer garden? I hope so, going out the front for a cigarette means having to look at the chav's fighting outside The Venue.
Had my attention drawn back to this by our Thai???????? posters.
Interesting to note Capital has been taken over by Greene King of Brockley Jack fame.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/8648136/Greene-King-scuppers-Fullers-and-buys-Capital-Pub-Company-for-93m.html
Will The New Cross House change again?
As the name "Jakarta" appears, I should should think the posts are Indonesian not Thai!
