Deptford's Market Square project underway

Deptford Dame reports that work to redevelop Douglas Way and create a new market square has begun.

According to Lewisham Council:

The improvements will consist of new paving, new lighting, the introduction of some trees and seating and new electrical in ground supply for the market stall traders and will connect cyclists and pedestrians to the new forthcoming Deptford station, Deptford Lounge, shops and markets and other unique qualities that Deptford has to offer.

As we wrote in our review of 2010, over the last year, the Council has managed to push through a number of good projects in the area, for which they deserve credit. But equally significant environmental improvements could be achieved, at a fraction of the cost of capital expenditure projects, by strengthening planning enforcement, sanitation and parking controls. Exhibit A: the vans of Brockley Cross.

new paving, new lighting, the introduction of some trees - sounds like the Brockley Cross redevelopment only slightly less ambitious...

The oldest station in London. On one of the longest brick structures in the world. Lets hope they don't ruin it.

@thisisengland we acknowledge the station's historic value and share your concerns. However as it is right now it is an awful place for regular users, inaccessible for wheelchairs, prams and bikes, badly lit and badly maintained.

I'm afraid the end result of 'renovation' will be more bland unimaginative modernisation.
Obviously wheelchair users need access, but prams and bikes? Whatever happened to the notion of folding pushchairs and bikes carried on shoulders?

Most of the Lu modernisations and refurbs are deadly dull, they work but any creativity is beaten out of them early In the design process. Is it listed? That can lead to some sympathy, it costs though.
