Appleby the day - Tories select Ladywell candidate

Lewisham Conservatives have chosen Ben Appleby as their candidate for the forthcoming Ladywell by-election, triggered by the premature resignation of the incumbent Labour councillor. Ben stood as a candidate in Lewisham Central in the May elections and serves as Treasurer to the Lewisham Deptford Conservatives.

Here's what the party says about Ben:

Ben lives in Hither Green and is a management consultant with a firm that specialises in the public sector. He previously lived in Newcastle upon Tyne where he completed a degree in Politics and Economics. Ben has an interest in both local and national politics and has been an active member of the Conservative Party since he was 16. As well as his political interests he is a fan of Newcastle United, and travels to the far reaches of the country to see them play, which can sometimes be a challenge from Lewisham!

A Geordie supporting Tory standing in the lewisham bi-election ... I can't quite put my finger on why but there seems something rather odd about that.

Management consultant specializing in tbe public sector? Areas that both ends of the political spectrum could make a sweeping generalization about. A true unifying candidate.

Yes Monkeyboy, a true everyman for this age, I'd even propose a parallel with the character of Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman.

Ooh good, the first opportunity since the election to shout 'F... Off you Tory C...' when they come canvassing. Bucket of water at the ready.

So he's never had a proper job then? Should be a shoo-in.

I've just sub-vocalised the title to the thread and seen the pun - love it!

(And don't knock the Geordies... The best people to man help-desks, instant sympathy in the very accent.)

The fact he's a geordie and a fellow Newcastle United fan is almost enough to get him my vote. Not quite though.

Oh well. There hasn't been a single Tory councillor in Newcastle since the mid-90s, so I suppose they have to try their hand elsewhere.

It's good to see Tory party making an effort in Lewisham. Got a leaflet through today and it looks like they are taking it really seriously. Good to see they are supporting the libraries, and that the government seem to be paying an interest. I for one will listen to what they have to say, even if nothing else!!!!
