Ladywell Village project 'next major scheme'

The Ladywell Village Improvement Group reports that their proposals to improve the streetscape in Ladywell received a positive response from Lewisham Council, but that funding constraints in Lewisham mean that the scheme remains "aspirational":

Mayor Sir Steve Bullock and his cabinet decided on Tuesday that funding would not be made available next year for the Ladywell Streetscape project but it would be Lewisham council’s “next major scheme”.

The Council has already committed to make improvements Brockley Cross, although it's all gone a bit quiet on that front lately. We'll ask for an update...

After looking at the current improvements on mantle road with the pavement widening, I wonder if the council would consider extending the pavement width (say two foot) on either side of the Brockley Road near Brockley cross. IMO is would improve the road/street scape hugely, slow down traffic and encourage pedestrians.

These improvements look good but I reckon the empty space opposite the car wash should be part of the scheme.

I suggest the empty plot (currently hidden by big advertising billboards) should become a market square.

A market space for Ladywell would encourage visitors to the neighbourhood who would then potentially spend their money in shops, restuarants and pubs too.

Also with railings being taken away there will need to be several new bike lock up points as railings are currently used for that purpose.

The Brockley Cross scheme is down for £150k funding in 2011/12 and a further £100k in 2012/13 - see agenda item 7 at www.lewisham.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/FC3BB5BA-8877-4564-8AB8-81D720E8EF3E/0/2971d41b998a48e4b9598d709fc6df8bItem7LIPfundingsubmissionreportFinal.PDF
This was approved at Mayor and Cabinet last night.

That empty bit of space opposite the car wash has some plans for a retail unit and flats:

Ah well. When its being as "Next major scheme" you know it will not come to fruitition esspecially considering all the other Lewisham gateway projects. Pleased about the Brockley scheme going ahead, it means our local government still have budgets for safety and improvement.
