Summer night movies on Hilly Fields
Veronica Corningstone: Take me to Pleasure Town.
Ron Burgundy: Oh, we're going there.
- Anchorman
The Pop Up Screens team explains:
Tickets are £8 in advance via our website or £10 on the door. Alternatively if you fancy seeing all the movies, then you can buy a weekend ticket for £20.
Our doors will open at 7.30pm and the movie will start at 9.30pm. (we have to wait for the sun to go down). There will be over 400 tickets on sale, so plenty for everyone... hopefully everyone will come!
You won’t be able to miss us, we’ve got a 5x11m screen. We’ve got food from Tucker’s Exotics who cook exotic meats, so if you fancy try springbok, buffalo or zebra now’s your chance. We’ve got genuinely the most amazing popcorn you’ll ever try from London Kettle Popcorn.
And we are operating a bar stocked with quality beers from craft brewers such as Brew Dog, Camden Town Brewery and Freedom Brewery plus tea, coffee and soft drinks. We’re working with the Live Live Project to screen short films from digital artists before each movie. We also have the very funny Helen Arney doing some stand up before the movie starts.
Open air cinema is completely different to a trip to the local multiplex, it sounds silly but it’s true. We always liken it to marrying together the atmosphere of a festival with the event of going to the cinema. It’s very chilled out and relaxed and everyone is happy. We try to make it about more than just the movie so we work with small quality suppliers to bring good food and drink in, play music beforehand so you can come in and catch up with your friends over a drink before settle down to watch a movie you know you’re going to love.
We were looking for locations in the area to stage an event and Hilly Fields was the our last stop on a whirlwind tour of Lewisham parks found with the aid of Google Maps. We knew nothing about the park, pulled up on Eastern Road and dragged ourselves up the hill. Once you’re at the top of the hill you can see across London and hit us how brilliant a location it is and that made our mind up. We’re really pleased with Hilly Fields and can’t wait to pop up in it.

I am not liking this. Do these people know that we have a thriving community here?
We don't need to be schooled about what open air activities are about. We have ice-skating, one of the fanciest food markets around. A touch of humility please. And Napoleon Dynamite and Ghostbusters seriously...
I see you cater for the vegetarians...! meat from Europe, North and South America, Africa and Australia, how fantastic and on my doorstep! I always wondered what zebra meat tasted like, NOT!!! I won't be joining you guys!
"we're really pleased with Hilly Fields"
Oh are you? so are WE funnily enough!
who are these people, who are they talking too?
That was me posting earlier too.
Zebra's not readily available here, to be fair. I don't know whether it counts as "artisan" or whether it's close enough to horse to count as 'good honest fare'(TM).
Sounds like a great idea. I'm in.
Pop Up Screens - please ignore the moaning twats above - they're always like this on here. I don't think they got enough love as children.
I think it is a great idea and I for one will be going. Not sure what the first 3 comments on this thread are really about - you sound arrogant, intolerant and not welcoming of others.
Couldn't agree more with DJ. Sounds great. Ignore any moaning anons. Oh, and Kolp on this occasion. Oh, and anyone who disagrees with me ;)
damn. got click happy. Above is me.
Yummy, sounds like a meat feast! I'll have a good piece of meat anytime -animals taste great and brill choice of movies, my favourites!!!
@Kolp - what are you wittering on about? They're staging a fun event, they're paying for the privilege of what they're doing and they are explaining what their customers can expect.
Ask yourself: what would Jesus do? In this case, I think he would not spend all his time whingeing. When you are not whingeing, you are patronising other people who you think are complaining about the wrong things. It's very wearisome. Cheer up.
jesus who? dis is lewisham man
I have no idea what planet the first three posters are (sounds like they are the same person anyway) but this sounds ace! Sign me up.
I think Kolp is the most annoying BCer. More annoying than the "mung" guy even.
Like everyone else, I am looking forward to this. More of this sort of thing please!
"When you are not whingeing, you are patronising other people who you think are complaining about the wrong things."
we are keen to be critical of others whilst neglecting that the same criticism could be levelled at oneself
Very cool - I will definitely be attending! Only one (minor) negative thing - I wish Brockley had more space for permanent things - we get lots of cool "pop-up" stuff, but I wish some of it had enough room in the area to become permanent (not a big movie screen obviously, I mean some of the food stuff mainly) - I guess we don't have enough retail / restaurant space available?
I posted the first & third comment.
The reality of the internet is that people speak their mind. Sometimes I will agree with things others I don't. Get over it.
Twat, moaner, etc, Religous trolling... lol at you lot. I don't give a monkey's comments about like this, unless constructive. So go for insults, knock yourselves out!
Being zebra itself doesn't make it fare, Nick - it's all in the production.
We have plenty of permanent restaurants such as Top Chef and Brockley Barge, but the variety is cautiously welcomed at this stage.
Another vote for "really looking forward to this"
Damn, I'm in Bermuda! lol
Don't worry Kolp, there are some veggie options.
Glad everyone else is a little more positive. We're looking forward to popping up in Hilly Fields.
@Anon at 15.21
They clearly cater for vegetarians, they are serving popcorn. Don't go telling me that's not sufficient... They also may not be catering for gluten intolerant canivorves with their zebra burgers, but I'm sure those people will get over it.
I don't believe they said it was a pop-up restaurant with a film showing on the side, maybe as the film starts at 9.30 and is on your doorstep you could try eating at home?
@kolp - I just don't know where to start. But at least you clearly don't have an objection to Anchorman, so I'll see you there!
There is a vegetarian option - you can go somewhere else!
Wooo! Brockley needs more fun stuff like this!
Gone onto their website - interesting how they plan to fulfil the statement "All other entrances to the Park will be closed." Did they actually explore the other side and see that the whole thing is wide open along the north western boundaries?
Tend to agree with Kolp - the tone is slightly patronising. And I hope, unlike the Olympics, they allow you to bring your own picnic - otherwise (unless you sensibly eat beforehand and smuggle in some water) it could turn into an expensive evening.
But good on them - there is room in the area for such commercial operators (and encouraging that they think there is enough profit to be made here) and the free / community events (like the various Free Film Festival people).
Just because it's not on Telegraph Hill...
I think this sounds brilliant. Goodness some people are whingey, sure Brockley/Ladywell has a great community, but really, the more the merrier surely?! I'll be there :D
Jesus wept. They're showing films not ethnically cleansing SE4. Cricket, fun fairs, local fayers, tennis, cafes, playgrounds, etc, etc... Exactly what public recreation areas are for.
Just leave the hours between 00:1 and 04:00 to us, nothing for you there.
That's pretty expensive. This isn't really going to be open to most of the local community, is it. It's clearly aimed at the 'vibrant' hipster market.
I'm not keen on the idea of these patronising outsiders sectioning off part of the park and charging a whopping great fee to use it.
I do hope Lewisham Council are going to make some money out of this, which they should then put back into activities which are inclusive for all of the local community.
I would've thought the BDS would appreciate the use of the screen after-hours?
Like fun fairs that have been fencing off bits of park for hundreads of years and charging local people? What's different other than the type of entertainment? Stop looking for a whine that supports your misanthropic world view.
"That's pretty expensive. This isn't really going to be open to most of the local community, is it. It's clearly aimed at the 'vibrant' hipster market."
Ticket to this £8 in advance. Ticket to Cineworld £10.20 + booking fee. I could have sworn when I went to see the Avengers at the O2, it wasn't just hipsters watching the movie.
...also it costs £7.50 to see a film at the Greenwich odeon on a Saturday so hardly out of sync with the market. If you don't want to go, dont.
This sounds absolutely lovely! I will certainly be attending. Thankyou for organising this and don't worry about the negatives, just concentrate on those who appreciate good honest accessible summer fun! Not sure about the jesus comment though...you don't need to be religious to see some people are just plain kill joys.
re: Jesus - I was just teasing Kolp, because he/she is forever invoking some trite religious saying or principle to underline the ancient wisdom of his/her opinion.
No I don't.
Ah! My poor fool, do you not see?
Consider the lily.
"he/she is forever invoking some trite religious saying or principle to underline the ancient wisdom of his/her opinion."
I don't. Simple as.
http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/Jim+Sterling/my-review-of-all-the-reviews-of-my-review-of-thing-with-the-thing-157006.phtml
Ah! Do you not see?
Sounds great! As long as they don't (and I cant see how they'd do it anyway) seal off the rest of the park then it is brilliant. Please though, not at the expense of other park users, for instance, me, who won't be going to watch a film but will be in the park with many other dog walkers at that time on an evening....
Have the birds got jobs?
I've been meaning to go to one of these outdoor cinemas for ages. Does anyone know if there's going to be something at Nunhead Cemetry this year?
Must remember to proof read. Typos everywhere.
Ghostbusters ... quality popcorn ... outside !! Great stuff.
Can we also have a pop-around-disco rollerskating rink ?? Can we pls, can we?
Rollerskating is very popular in Brockley.
It is rather expensive. If you want to charge new film prices, show new films.
Somerset House are charging over £16 to watch 'old' films there this summer.
Don't like it - don't go.
yes the smell of burning exotic animals will really enhance the atmosphere and bring pleasure to all.
surely you people who do this kind of thing could perhaps do it in secret or something - it'll be even more naughty and exciting for you. why not have dog and cat too or is that going too far for you?
@Hardlianotion - I paid over £30 to watch a Secret Cinema screening of an old film I wouldn't pay to rent on DVD. It's not about the film, it's about the experience!
£8 to enjoy a festival of film in a beautiful setting with my fun-loving fellow Brockleyites as Kolp scowls from behind a fence? I'd pay double! (although I have already booked two tickets to Friday night, so they can't charge me more now).
Nick I will be there, with my notepad!
"Do these people know that we have a thriving community here?"
I imagine they do otherwise why would they waste their time staging an event, duh!
You imagine do you? Duh!
Sound slike an enjoyable event. But how are they going to stop people simply tipping up outside their cordon and watching it? There does seem to be a bit of difficulty in stopping this in the 'open ground' that is Hilly Fields.
As usual with these events I've seen the films a few times already, or in the case of Ghostbusters many many times. Good though they are wouldn't want to pay to see them again. Wish they had a bit more variety. The Scoop does this well with it's Autumn film program, from Hitchcock through to more modern fare.
Reg, my thoughts exactly... it's a public park, who's going to stop you from just standing there and watching?
Shame the films are all so bad, too, otherwise might have considered going (and paying, not standing around to see it for free).
@reg
Sound dissipates pretty quickly outdoors so if you're too far away you probably wouldn't be able to hear properly.
For another such event in Nunhead Cemetery - yes, probably, next September see here for details in due course and you could probably get on their mailing list which would help if you need tickets because the event, though free, is popular and space is limited.
Likewise for the New Cross and Deptford one - again nothing more planned yet (not even the planning meetings), but they did OK in Fordham Park (despite the weather) and "Up" in the Telegraph Hill Upper Park was lovely. Being free, no issues about access.
To answer the earlier Anon., although IMO our views of the city knock the socks off those from Hilly Fields, the park is simply not big enough and I would not want such an event there if it closed the entire park to those dog-walkers who rely on it. In Hilly Fields they will presumably cordon off the relevant area.
(And, for Nunhead Cemetery sooner than next September, next Saturday is the FONC Open Day - usual stalls, tours and home-made cakes from 11 to 5.)
It also depends where the fenced of 'arena' is and which way the screen is facing.
I imagine it's occurred to the organisers.
Brockley Max held a hugely successful outdoor screening on Hilly Fields a couple of years ago up at the stone circle, followed by a VJ with everyone dancing the evening away. I wish our successors the best of luck with it. BTW, this year's festival has three film nights.
I didn't say I was going to watch it without paying. That would spoil the fun - and ensure that the event isn't repeated.
The amount of NIMBY, hand-wringing mungism is dissapointing but not surprising.
Of course Brockley Max I forgot to mention it in my first post. This area has been doing this stuff for years with better films and without the premium pricing.
I don't think the park has ever been closed off like it will have to make this event work, so it's unprecendented.
The press release which wasn't tailored to a local audience does read as patronising, as if we're some backwater and you can try exotic meat.
We have a market that we can go to week in week out for free that sells tongue and cheeks of animals and probably the best burgers in the shape of Mother Flipper.
This is a great area and businesses and developers will want to capitalise on it, fair enough, free market etc and I support business creation, but don't let us just sell ourselves short.
If people want to do business here bring quality.
And that is ALL i was saying folks.
@kolp Shhhh. You're not making it any better for yourself.
Kolp
"This area has been doing this stuff for years"
Occasionally. The more the merrier. What's your point?
"with better films"
Debatable.
"and without the premium pricing."
But with taxpayer subsidy. And some of that "premium pricing" goes to help pay for Hilly Fields.
"I don't think the park has ever been closed off"
The park's not being closed off. They're going to put a perimiter up around a small bit. I doubt most people will even notice.
"so it's unprecendented."
Hardly. The MAX has erected private tents on Hilly Fields before for music, Blackheath is always being roped off for fairs, circuses, etc, etc. And this kind of thing happens all over London all the time. People enjoy it.
"The press release which wasn't tailored to a local audience does read as patronising,"
It wasn't a press release, they emailed me and I asked them a few questions. Those were their answers. No idea why you thought it was patronising. I asked them to describe what people could expect if they went. So they did.
"as if we're some backwater and you can try exotic meat."
Bollocks. They just explained that it would be on offer.
"We have a market that we can go to week in week out for free that sells tongue and cheeks of animals and probably the best burgers in the shape of Mother Flipper."
Chippy irrelevance.
"This is a great area and businesses and developers will want to capitalise on it, fair enough, free market etc and I support business creation,"
You have a funny way of showing your support.
"but don't let us just sell ourselves short."
I have no idea what this means.
"If people want to do business here bring quality."
In what way is this not quality? And if it isn't want people want, the market will decide.
"And that is ALL i was saying folks."
Well you were being weird the first time and you're being weird again.
Kolp, brockley market is truly brilliant but it's operating at the premium end (with a few exceptions) and pricing to match so not sure what your comparison is. Are you saying it should only art house films from Iran? And that pop culture is worthless? Who's patronising who exactly? Get over yourself, it's a cinema but outside. That's all.
As for Nick, I think your characterisation of the contribution I make to this blog via comments is utterly ridiculous. I know that you toil in PR and spin must come as second nature, but seriously, you seem to have soun out of control. The fact that despite all insults on this thread no one agreed with you speaks for itself.
If I was even remotely like that I'd be run off this site and quite rightly.
You for some reason keep bringing up my religion (though you don't seem to know what it is – but I suppose to you all religions are the same, so who cares).
I come on this site for laughs and a bit of banter. So can try and troll me all day long.
Btw. To all the lurkers that support me thank you my brethren, jah rastafari (oops there i go again "invoking some trite religious saying or principle to underline the ancient wisdom of my opinion."
@kolp I agree with Nick.
The last time I disagreed with kolp (s)he shouted at me and said (s)he wasn't coming back. I'm quite glad (s)he didn't mean it, though.
I have no particular desire to eat exotic meats but I'm more than happy for them to be part of what sounds like a fun venture. Good luck to all concerned – and put me down for a place near the front for Ghostbusters.
Yeah you agree with Nick because he's your mate, but the point he made about religious stuff is plainly wrong.
You decided to go into attack mode because I said something you didn't understand. I told you I'm not interested because things end up in back and forth...like they have today. It is time waster.
The thing I've noticed is that people don't really read what's written alot of the time. They simply react. Look at MB comments just now. He's reacting to something I haven't said, but something HE feels i've said. This is the same with many of the insults above. I can't spend all day correcting people. Hence I just walk away from it.
so cheerio.
@kolp (I know you're no longer listening but I just can't let it lie.) If you go back and look at the ticket gates thread you'll find that I either did read what you wrote or I got very lucky. You said it was all about the man (might have been train company) and not about the consumer at all. I said that stopping fare dodgers was *all* about respecting honest, fare paying passengers. Not a perfect solution (we agreed on that) but also not the anti-customer measure you painted it as.
I'm not sure what was "attack mode" about it. I was disagreeing with you. Are you in "attack mode" every time you disagree with someone?
(Full disclosure: I've met Nick on four or five occasions. We got on quite well. I haven't yet invited him to any family gatherings, but that's mainly because I'm afraid he'll bring Sainsbury's sausage rolls. Or it Tesco's? I forget.)
@kolp. I agree with Nick and I've never met him.
@kolp what's wrong with a pricing policy aimed at the 'hipster' market?
BrockleyBen you are quite right I am not reading it. Good Lord man, we all need to get a life here.
Thanks for the entertainment today everyone. But I have to do other stuff now.
kolp out.
Ooops I said "Good Lord" religious fanatic me!
Anchorman, Napolean Dynamite and Ghostbusters??? Wow! Never seen them before!!! Really pushing the cinematic envelope there!!! Mugs...
Kolp, I agree with Nick (in fact I probably agree with everyone who isn't you). From your posts and reactions to comments you give the impression of someone suffering from both superiority AND persecution complexes - if this isn't the case then you really should read your comments before posting to make sure that you're being clear!
Anon 11:51 - In regards to the film choices, IMO, open air cinemas are not the best places to see films that aren't well known or that need to be closely followed as people move around quite a lot, there's more ambient noise than an indoor cinema etc etc. Also, I have seen Weird Science (showing somewhere else unfortunately) about 50 times but never on a big screen and I would happily watch it yet again!
I presume the organisers are reading this discussion: Are we allowed to bring our own snacks/drinks? (Sorry if it's mentioned somewhere above - I didn't have the stomach to sift through what's inevitably a lot of moaning and bickering.)
'Snakes on a plane'
Or its low budget remake 'Slow Worms on the 484'
Excited for this but the price is slightly steep!
Love the idea, don't mind the price but not keen on the movies on offer. All are of the same genre (American stupid-comedy) and will appeal to a similar crowd that isn't me. I think more people would go if each night was designed to appeal to different sets of movie goers. Also Britain makes excellent films, why not go home grown for at least one screening?
can i just point out that this event is taking place in ladywell, not brockley!
after all, as is helpfully pointed out on the event website, the closest train station is ladywell.
brockley-types empire building again - you just have to lay claim to everything worthwhile in the vicinity. anyone fancy visiting the cutty sark in brockley? or how about the tate modern in nearby brockley?
i appreciate that this location is erroneously stated on the above-mentioned event website, however i suggest that you swap the arrogance for an A-Z.
ladywell is not some crappy little suburb of brockley. it is another part of lewisham. frankly you lot can keep your wanky wannabe borough market...
Massive, no one cares where it's located only whether it's close enough. Stop over reacting, you sound mental.
Ladywell is in Brockley
Actually mental AND wrong. The article does not say its in brockley (or ladywell) not that any of that matters in the least. Stupid teenagers stab each other over the colour of bins and postcodes. Obviously some adults have the same weird tribal nature. Personally I walk around hilly fields and sometimes I even venture out of S London. I'm a crazy guy!
Hmmm...
*adds massive lady to list of weirdly obsessed, easily offended nutters along with kolp and the mung/honest bores*
naff off
Touchy!
Anyone fancying this can now go for super cheap! http://www.kgbdeals.co.uk/london/deals/117149/open-air-movie-night---pop-up-screens---london
