The Pop Up Screens team explains:
Tickets are £8 in advance via our website or £10 on the door. Alternatively if you fancy seeing all the movies, then you can buy a weekend ticket for £20.
Our doors will open at 7.30pm and the movie will start at 9.30pm. (we have to wait for the sun to go down). There will be over 400 tickets on sale, so plenty for everyone... hopefully everyone will come!
You won’t be able to miss us, we’ve got a 5x11m screen. We’ve got food from Tucker’s Exotics who cook exotic meats, so if you fancy try springbok, buffalo or zebra now’s your chance. We’ve got genuinely the most amazing popcorn you’ll ever try from London Kettle Popcorn.
And we are operating a bar stocked with quality beers from craft brewers such as Brew Dog, Camden Town Brewery and Freedom Brewery plus tea, coffee and soft drinks. We’re working with the Live Live Project to screen short films from digital artists before each movie. We also have the very funny Helen Arney doing some stand up before the movie starts.
Open air cinema is completely different to a trip to the local multiplex, it sounds silly but it’s true. We always liken it to marrying together the atmosphere of a festival with the event of going to the cinema. It’s very chilled out and relaxed and everyone is happy. We try to make it about more than just the movie so we work with small quality suppliers to bring good food and drink in, play music beforehand so you can come in and catch up with your friends over a drink before settle down to watch a movie you know you’re going to love.
We were looking for locations in the area to stage an event and Hilly Fields was the our last stop on a whirlwind tour of Lewisham parks found with the aid of Google Maps. We knew nothing about the park, pulled up on Eastern Road and dragged ourselves up the hill. Once you’re at the top of the hill you can see across London and hit us how brilliant a location it is and that made our mind up. We’re really pleased with Hilly Fields and can’t wait to pop up in it.

We don't need to be schooled about what open air activities are about. We have ice-skating, one of the fanciest food markets around. A touch of humility please. And Napoleon Dynamite and Ghostbusters seriously...
I see you cater for the vegetarians...! meat from Europe, North and South America, Africa and Australia, how fantastic and on my doorstep! I always wondered what zebra meat tasted like, NOT!!! I won't be joining you guys!

Very cool - I will definitely be attending! Only one (minor) negative thing - I wish Brockley had more space for permanent things - we get lots of cool "pop-up" stuff, but I wish some of it had enough room in the area to become permanent (not a big movie screen obviously, I mean some of the food stuff mainly) - I guess we don't have enough retail / restaurant space available?

Being zebra itself doesn't make it fare, Nick - it's all in the production.
We have plenty of permanent restaurants such as Top Chef and Brockley Barge, but the variety is cautiously welcomed at this stage.

They clearly cater for vegetarians, they are serving popcorn. Don't go telling me that's not sufficient... They also may not be catering for gluten intolerant canivorves with their zebra burgers, but I'm sure those people will get over it.
I don't believe they said it was a pop-up restaurant with a film showing on the side, maybe as the film starts at 9.30 and is on your doorstep you could try eating at home?

Gone onto their website - interesting how they plan to fulfil the statement "All other entrances to the Park will be closed." Did they actually explore the other side and see that the whole thing is wide open along the north western boundaries?
Tend to agree with Kolp - the tone is slightly patronising. And I hope, unlike the Olympics, they allow you to bring your own picnic - otherwise (unless you sensibly eat beforehand and smuggle in some water) it could turn into an expensive evening.
But good on them - there is room in the area for such commercial operators (and encouraging that they think there is enough profit to be made here) and the free / community events (like the various Free Film Festival people).
Just because it's not on Telegraph Hill...
I think this sounds brilliant. Goodness some people are whingey, sure Brockley/Ladywell has a great community, but really, the more the merrier surely?! I'll be there :D
Jesus wept. They're showing films not ethnically cleansing SE4. Cricket, fun fairs, local fayers, tennis, cafes, playgrounds, etc, etc... Exactly what public recreation areas are for.
Just leave the hours between 00:1 and 04:00 to us, nothing for you there.

I do hope Lewisham Council are going to make some money out of this, which they should then put back into activities which are inclusive for all of the local community.

Ticket to this £8 in advance. Ticket to Cineworld £10.20 + booking fee. I could have sworn when I went to see the Avengers at the O2, it wasn't just hipsters watching the movie.
...also it costs £7.50 to see a film at the Greenwich odeon on a Saturday so hardly out of sync with the market. If you don't want to go, dont.
This sounds absolutely lovely! I will certainly be attending. Thankyou for organising this and don't worry about the negatives, just concentrate on those who appreciate good honest accessible summer fun! Not sure about the jesus comment though...you don't need to be religious to see some people are just plain kill joys.

Sounds great! As long as they don't (and I cant see how they'd do it anyway) seal off the rest of the park then it is brilliant. Please though, not at the expense of other park users, for instance, me, who won't be going to watch a film but will be in the park with many other dog walkers at that time on an evening....

Rollerskating is very popular in Brockley.

Somerset House are charging over £16 to watch 'old' films there this summer.

@Hardlianotion - I paid over £30 to watch a Secret Cinema screening of an old film I wouldn't pay to rent on DVD. It's not about the film, it's about the experience!
£8 to enjoy a festival of film in a beautiful setting with my fun-loving fellow Brockleyites as Kolp scowls from behind a fence? I'd pay double! (although I have already booked two tickets to Friday night, so they can't charge me more now).

Sound slike an enjoyable event. But how are they going to stop people simply tipping up outside their cordon and watching it? There does seem to be a bit of difficulty in stopping this in the 'open ground' that is Hilly Fields.
As usual with these events I've seen the films a few times already, or in the case of Ghostbusters many many times. Good though they are wouldn't want to pay to see them again. Wish they had a bit more variety. The Scoop does this well with it's Autumn film program, from Hitchcock through to more modern fare.
Reg, my thoughts exactly... it's a public park, who's going to stop you from just standing there and watching?
Shame the films are all so bad, too, otherwise might have considered going (and paying, not standing around to see it for free).

Sound dissipates pretty quickly outdoors so if you're too far away you probably wouldn't be able to hear properly.
For another such event in Nunhead Cemetery - yes, probably, next September see here for details in due course and you could probably get on their mailing list which would help if you need tickets because the event, though free, is popular and space is limited.
Likewise for the New Cross and Deptford one - again nothing more planned yet (not even the planning meetings), but they did OK in Fordham Park (despite the weather) and "Up" in the Telegraph Hill Upper Park was lovely. Being free, no issues about access.
To answer the earlier Anon., although IMO our views of the city knock the socks off those from Hilly Fields, the park is simply not big enough and I would not want such an event there if it closed the entire park to those dog-walkers who rely on it. In Hilly Fields they will presumably cordon off the relevant area.
(And, for Nunhead Cemetery sooner than next September, next Saturday is the FONC Open Day - usual stalls, tours and home-made cakes from 11 to 5.)
It also depends where the fenced of 'arena' is and which way the screen is facing.
I imagine it's occurred to the organisers.
Brockley Max held a hugely successful outdoor screening on Hilly Fields a couple of years ago up at the stone circle, followed by a VJ with everyone dancing the evening away. I wish our successors the best of luck with it. BTW, this year's festival has three film nights.
I didn't say I was going to watch it without paying. That would spoil the fun - and ensure that the event isn't repeated.
The amount of NIMBY, hand-wringing mungism is dissapointing but not surprising.

We have a market that we can go to week in week out for free that sells tongue and cheeks of animals and probably the best burgers in the shape of Mother Flipper.
This is a great area and businesses and developers will want to capitalise on it, fair enough, free market etc and I support business creation, but don't let us just sell ourselves short.
If people want to do business here bring quality.

Hardly. The MAX has erected private tents on Hilly Fields before for music, Blackheath is always being roped off for fairs, circuses, etc, etc. And this kind of thing happens all over London all the time. People enjoy it.

It wasn't a press release, they emailed me and I asked them a few questions. Those were their answers. No idea why you thought it was patronising. I asked them to describe what people could expect if they went. So they did.

Kolp, brockley market is truly brilliant but it's operating at the premium end (with a few exceptions) and pricing to match so not sure what your comparison is. Are you saying it should only art house films from Iran? And that pop culture is worthless? Who's patronising who exactly? Get over yourself, it's a cinema but outside. That's all.

@kolp (I know you're no longer listening but I just can't let it lie.) If you go back and look at the ticket gates thread you'll find that I either did read what you wrote or I got very lucky. You said it was all about the man (might have been train company) and not about the consumer at all. I said that stopping fare dodgers was *all* about respecting honest, fare paying passengers. Not a perfect solution (we agreed on that) but also not the anti-customer measure you painted it as.
I'm not sure what was "attack mode" about it. I was disagreeing with you. Are you in "attack mode" every time you disagree with someone?
(Full disclosure: I've met Nick on four or five occasions. We got on quite well. I haven't yet invited him to any family gatherings, but that's mainly because I'm afraid he'll bring Sainsbury's sausage rolls. Or it Tesco's? I forget.)

From your posts and reactions to comments you give the impression of someone suffering from both superiority AND persecution complexes - if this isn't the case then you really should read your comments before posting to make sure that you're being clear!
Anon 11:51 - In regards to the film choices, IMO, open air cinemas are not the best places to see films that aren't well known or that need to be closely followed as people move around quite a lot, there's more ambient noise than an indoor cinema etc etc. Also, I have seen Weird Science (showing somewhere else unfortunately) about 50 times but never on a big screen and I would happily watch it yet again!
I presume the organisers are reading this discussion: Are we allowed to bring our own snacks/drinks? (Sorry if it's mentioned somewhere above - I didn't have the stomach to sift through what's inevitably a lot of moaning and bickering.)

Excited for this but the price is slightly steep!
Love the idea, don't mind the price but not keen on the movies on offer. All are of the same genre (American stupid-comedy) and will appeal to a similar crowd that isn't me. I think more people would go if each night was designed to appeal to different sets of movie goers. Also Britain makes excellent films, why not go home grown for at least one screening?
can i just point out that this event is taking place in ladywell, not brockley!
after all, as is helpfully pointed out on the event website, the closest train station is ladywell.
